For Mitsubishi, the future is here.
For the value-conscious electric vehicle (EV) buyer, Mitsubishi will soon offer the i MiEV. Based on the Mitsubishi “i” gasoline-powered minicar, the i MiEV is a zero-emissions vehicle whose name is an acronym for “Mitsubishi innovative Electric Vehicle.” This stylish little hatch will be available in early 2012.
The federal government offers a $7,500 tax credit on all electric vehicles, dropping the base price of the i MiEV to a mere $20,490. That’s a bargain for a vehicle that gives its owner the peace of mind of never having to worry about $4.00 per gallon of gasoline.
The cost of the i MiEV is about the price of a well-equipped compact car, but owners of this environmentally friendly EV will receive much more for their money. For starters, the electric i MiEV can be charged on the typical household outlet. The base ES model comes equipped with a heated driver’s seat, air conditioning with micron filter, keyless entry, sporty steering wheel, LED rear taillamps and an onboard recharging system with a portable, 120-volt eight-amp charging cable, so there are no compromises to the owner’s lifestyle. Of course, Mitsubishi wouldn’t want its buyers to go without great tunes, so the automaker added a 100-watt sound system with MP3 capability.
Move up to the SE trim and the i MiEV comes with a 360-watt, eight-speaker deluxe sound system, leather-wrapped steering wheel and shiftknob, upgraded seats with silver accents and a unique two-tone interior instrument panel and door panels. And that’s not all. The SE also adds 15-inch alloy wheels and foglights to differentiate the exterior. You also have the option of heated side mirrors and a lithium-ion battery warning system.
If the SE trim still isn’t exclusive enough, Mitsubishi will also offer an SE Premium Package featuring a hard drive-based navigation system with rearview camera, Mitsubishi’s exclusive FUSE Hands-free Link with USB port and steering wheel-mounted audio controls. This top trim adds a Mitsubishi-first, ultra-fast Level 3 battery recharging capability. With this system, owners can perform an 80 percent charge in only 30 minutes. That’s amazing technology, and it makes the gas station less relevant than ever before.
And what about performance? Mitsubishi expects to provide a driving range of 85 miles, which is more than enough to cover the distance most drivers travel in a given day. With the quick charge option and Mitsubishi’s available 220-volt charging station, the i MiEV will be charged up and ready for road duty in a jiffy.
The i MiEV is going to change the way drivers think about transportation, and Mitsubishi is even revolutionizing the order process. Perspective buyers can create a Mitsubishi i account with a My Mitsubishi i page, then place a $299 deposit on a car via PayPal.
Mitsubishi has been hard at work for 40 years to deliver this type of vehicle to the marketplace, and i MiEV buyers will be the first to reap the rewards of all that labor. There is little like the i MiEV, a car that eliminates the anxiety of ever-rising, budget-busting gasoline prices on the market today.
